   It has been raining pretty hard in los angeles since i left to come back to chicago. This 25 foot boulder fell onto the road in topanga canyon.   In other current events Mike Chertoff has been appointed the new head of Homelan Security. In case you forgot, the last nominee Bernard Kerik, chief of police of NYC at the time of the 2001 attacks was unable to take the position due to the fact that 1) he had failed to pay taxes for an illegal immigrant he had working as a nanny and 2) was runnning (or at least in charge of) a house of ill repute in NYC during his tenure as police chief.

  The American Civil Liberties Union (news – web sites) said Chertoff’s public record suggests that “he sees the Bill of Rights as an obstacle to national security, rather than a guidebook for how to do security properly.

  For those of you who need more reasons to believe lawyers are scum (sorry law school friends, you guys are the exception, not the rule) here is a wonderful example. AGuy Womack, lawyer for Charles Graner, the alleged ringleader of the Iraq prisoner abuse scandal, offered this defense for his client… From Reuters:

  
  

  piling naked prisoners into pyramids and leading them by a leash were acceptable methods of prisoner control. He compared this to pyramids made by cheerleaders at sports events and parents putting tethers on toddlers.

  
  

  “Don’t cheerleaders all over America form pyramids six to eight times a year. Is that torture?” Guy Womack, Graner’s attorney, said in opening arguments to the 10-member U.S. military jury at the reservist’s court-martial.
