  • Allow Myself to Introduce...Myself

The countdown to Match day continues and my ranklist is changed on an almost daily basis. But one message from fellow xangan susangalloway caught my attention

"what gathers your interest (apart from your facination with cannabalism/alternative medicine) in being a doc?"

And since susan was nice enough to complete a 100 list post* (see mine here) I felt it would be only fair to answer her and my other new subbers/friends. Who apparently determined my worth based on a couple of posts about poop and cannabalism...you guys might as well know what you are getting yourself into.

*That's right...100 list. To hell with your 25 facts...man up and join the century club!

My name is The Josh, JD, or Almost Dr J, depending on when you started reading and how you know me. If you know my last name, congrats, you have most likely met me in real life. I am a 4th year medical student in chicago, getting ready to graduate in June and begin my 3 years of internal medicine indentured servitude (oops, i meant residency). I am fascinated by people in general which is a short answer of why I got into medicine, and I am particularly enamored of pirates, zombies, medical history, cannabalism and of course, fecal humor.

No matter how many times I have had to perform rectal exams, or palpate for masses in breasts, thd 3 year old in me still giggles silently "heh...butts and boobies." This in no way affects my professionalism, but it does let me enjoy my job a lot more. Especially considering how many smells, fluids and unpleasant things in general I come into contact with on a daily basis.

In the next few months, I will be completing a rather significant chapter of my life and as such, I figured its time to take on a few big themes of the past 5 years. Things like why its great to be a med student, why it's horrible, would I do it again, and of course a post with nothing but links to what I consider my best posts of the last 5 years. So thanks for reading, friending, subbing, rec'ing, or even just stopping by. Because when it all boils down, it is YOU PEOPLE that make this worthwhile. I would write regardless, but your feedback, interest, and friendship has made me a better writer, a better storyteller, a better listener, the motivation to be a better (or at least more interesting person) and ultimately I hope a better doctor...

because all medicine really is is listening to someone tell their story, and then helping them to continue it. So thanks guys...I write for me, but I blog for you. And now that you know me, how about you leave a comment telling me something about you?

After all, i need something to read while I work on these "Best of med school" posts.

    Welcome (or welcome back!)

    -Almost Dr J

  • Thank you, Josh! :)

Lol, it was definitely more than the poop which determined your worth, although that may have been a major contributing factor =P

You're indeed an interesting and quirky character. Keep up the great writings! :)

  • I have known you for a long time.  You introduced me to dead baby jokes.  Life hasn't been the same since.

  • I've always wondered if docs were thinking stuff like that. :) I've enjoyed reading your posts and look forward to what you have to write in the future!

  • I always imagined my gyno would go home to his wife and say, sorry honey, but I've seen way too many vaginas today. Hahaha.

  • I backpacked in Scotland with a housewife, a priest, a painter, a friend, and a frenemie. It was probably one of the best experiences of my life.

  • once, as a kid, i had the doctor examine my puss... and till this day, i still wonder what was going thru his mind. glad to see that doctors are only humans

  •  that was a really sweet introduction. Glad to meet you JD aka Josh
