The Birfday post
I am 29 years old today!
Another year has passed on by
Another year i didnt die
Another year around the sun
Another year of having fun
Another year, make no mistake
Another-screw this, time for cake!
I have a birthday today. I love my birthday. It is a defiant little holiday: HA HA HA I AM HERE. TAKE THAT, SUCKERS.It would be cool if you grew every single year on your birthday. Or maybe people should start to shrink at a certain point in their lives instead, and get gradually smaller and smaller until death. Then you could keep Grandma in a jar (dont forget to poke some holes in the lid!) and when she disappeared, you would know that she had died. Solves the nursing home issue but the potential for elder abuse goes way up. Hmmm.
With the traditional part of the post out of the way (8 years and running!) how did I celebrate my birthday? Well normally I either go out traveling, or I meet up for dinner with friends. So this year I combined the too and had my friends go on a scavenger hunt around los angeles with the finish line being where we had dinner.
I will get photos of this up later, but the dinner clue was this:
Dinner will be held at my Italian friend Joe’s basement. He lives in santa monica but was born in minneapolis. We will be eating near his pope table.
If you cant solve the above clue, go ahead and google it. Team were given 3 hours to complete tasks such as giving a piggyback ride to a total stranger or collecting a piece of artifical turf. The more complete list and photos forthcoming when the hospital is not kicking my butt with huge workloads.
As for the hospital, I am currently on a one intern team, meaning on any given day i carry from 6-13 patients. Compared with a two intern team which carries 1-8. though lets not kid ourselves, no one ever has just one patient. The hours are long, the patients are complicated, and my learning curve has gone up accordingly. I dont make the same simple oversights or mistakes I did at the beginning of the year, but that is because I spend much more time fine tuning the details of my plan, going back and double and triple checking labs and med orders and a whole host of other stuff that leaves me too tired to come home and post. I know, i have been terrible to what few of you remain. I wouldnt expect it to improve either, as in 2 weeks I begin a month of ICU, aka intensive care aka sleep deprivation hell.
After that, it will be july 1st and I will be a resident! 1/3 of the way through my training. How the heck did that happen so quickly? I will be responsible not only for more critical patients, but for the brand new interns. I still dont feel like I know anything more often than not, and all of a sudden I am an authority figure? stressful, but not unbearably so.
More updates coming as time permits, but in the meantime hope everyone is doing well.
