My first night as the MOD (medicine on duty) resident passed relatively uneventfully, thankfully. Turns out I know more than I thought I did, despite not feeling like I know anything. Thank goodness the nurses cant see that I have uptodate open everytime they call me to ask something. Of course anytime I tried to walk further than 5 feet from a computer the pager would go off. Here are some selected blurbs from the night, via both my twitter account, and my gchats with fellow sleep deprived residents. No time stamps, but I assure you I was awake from 5p-7a straight
-Made drug seeking liver patients night because I didnt know what I could give him other than dilaudid. Then he had the nerve to ask me for it IV instead of oral.
-Several calls from nurses to inform me that things happened like patient getting high blood sugar or patient pooped. Not that I needed to do anything, they just wanted to let me know. Ya know in case I had orders like, DONT LET PEOPLE POOP.
-Patient vomiting coffee ground blood. Hello, attending on duty! Luckily, this was one of the few things I knew what to do…suction suction suction, chest x ray to check for esophageal perf, and h and H. Now if only i could figure out the key phrase required to bring those orders up on our EMR
Nobody bleeds out on my watch, old woman. Prepare to be transfused
-it is frustrating to order all these sleeping meds for people knowing i dont get to nap myself
-I put in an order to induce sputum. Haha what power! make mucus for me monkeys! I order it!
-I was just paged to ask if a patient could take a shower at 3:45AM because she was hot and itchy.
-My job on night float is to make sure nobody dies til morning. Not even long term care…they just have to stay alive while I personally am in the hospital.
I like the twitter type format for night float because it is much faster than xanga, especially when I am getting all these constant pages. However rather than abandon you dear readers, I will simply be bringing over the nights tweets to this page when the mood so strikes. Or you can continue to watch my slow descent into madness on nights I am working live via twitter by following rveblade.
