  • Observations on Oregon

Oregon seems to be populated mostly by

    1)white people
    2) hippies (the unwashed granola variety)
    3) rednecks

Yes this is a harsh judgement to make in 1 full day. The decision is not written in stone, just based on observations made biking around today. Then again, eugene is a college town, and college is out for the summer. So i guess these are just the people left over. Not that most of them arent nice and/or friendly. But I am accustomed to big city diversity and thus far i have not seen it.

There is no sales tax in oregon. on anything. along with the full serve gas pumping i feel like i have totally stepped into the past

On the upside, there are a ton of bike trails, a rose garden and a free rock climbing wall, so I ought to have plenty to do on the weekend when I want to get my outdoors time in.

Now it is off to my local greengrocer for to procure supplies for the month

more observations on Oregon to come

  • I’m an Oregon native. Minorities exist in PDX, mostly Asian and eastern European. Rednecks are anywhere south of Eugene or east of Bend. Hippies…well, yeah. There’s a lot of them.

  • @vanedave - it came as a surprise to me because i had no clue what the hell was in oregon at all. It would be like you going to baklatavagigagooshen and finding nothing but goat people.

  • Does it come as a great shock to you that there are nothing but white people in Oregon. That’s like me going to Compton for the first time and being shocked by the presence of gangs.

  • You are right!  There are no minorities in Oregon.  I was just having a conversation about the NW with friends last night.  There was some story on the news where a man set up a booth at a farmer’s market of sorts in Portland called “Meet a Black Guy.”  I guess he had a lot of people come up to talk with him.  :)   I’m glad the Rose garden got a mention.

  • Where in Oregon are you?  I’m so jealous!  I want to go to Portland for residency.

    PS:  loved the standup comedy!!

  • Stepping onto the past.  For some that’s a blessing. I don’t know if I am one of those people. I remember being in a town to the north of Germany and being completely content for a couple of days of snow, cake, and coffee…then, we were anxious.  Haha.  Good luck with accumulating your provisions (sounds very Little House in the Prairie).
