Work is getting frustrating...I am given less and less to do each day, and while observing is all fun and good, it does not give me a lot of opportunities to impress the attending enough for a letter of rec. Heres to hoping I at least get some published research out of this rotation.
But you dont come here to listen to me bitch...at least not today! you come here for some olympics fun
The "eyes" have it
"The ad was sponsored by a Spanish courier company, Seur. Spain's
team, ironically, also is sponsored by Li-Ning Footwear, a Chinese
company founded by Li Ning, the final torchbearer who was
hoisted along the top of Beijing National Stadium during the Olympic
Opening Ceremony finale.
The Spanish-language paper El Mundo has a piece debating whether the ad was racist
that basically calls out the British press for trying to smear Spain's
good name. But they miss the point. Whether the picture was made in
good fun is irrelevant. It was a ridiculous idea that was bound to
upset a lot of people.
It's
baffling that nobody involved in the picture -- from the photographers
to the players -- even seemed to consider that this ad would be looked
at
negatively. Did it not occur to somebody that it might not be a
good idea to mock a large portion of the continent before the world's
largest
athletic competition that, by the way, happens to take place on that continent.
Were they not aware of an invention called "the Internet" that allows
pictures taken in Spain to be transmitted all over the world for the
eyes of everyone?"
Of course it's racist.
And it's also insanely stupid.
"Okay, guys, we're going to the Olympics. Where are they?"
"China."
"Okay, quick, what do we know about China?"
"Oh, aren't they the ones with the slanty eyes?"
"Um..."
"Yeah, let's go with that!"
"But the ad is about... the Olympics..."
"No,
shut up. Slanty eyes! Slanty eyes wins! That clearly demonstrates our
message! The message which is ours! Which is: we're going to a land of
slanty eyes!"
"But we're going to do something."
"...Surrounded by people with slanty eyes. I don't get the problem, man. Just pose."
Or at least that is how i think it went down
The ugliest girl in china
On the left, you will see Lin Miaoke, who attempted to bring back Milli Vanilli's career when she lip synched to the actual voice of Yang Peiyi, a 7 year old who the chinese government OFFICIALLY deemed not cute enough to be the face of the olympics. How do you explain THAT to your kid later in life...well honey, you almost were in the olympic ceremony, but we are just going to use your voice because the government tells us we beat you too hard with the ugly stick. Now stop crying or we will bust that grill to london standards
The sexiest man in india

No
individual gold has mattered so much to so many people in the history of
Olympics. It was a medal for Abhinav; it was redemption for India. Never again
will anyone be able to point a smug, sardonic finger and say: "No Indian is good
enough to win an individual Olympic
gold."
Damn, now how will I mock all my med school friends? Btw, Abhinav has now become India's most eligible bachelor and sexiest man, narrowly edging out the performers of the unforgettable tour, which ironically, has been forgotten
14 Olympic Stories we are all sick of hearing about
And the best for last, reposted from here because i know you are too lazy to click a link
A member of the U.S. Olympic diving team was disqualified from
competition today when it was learned that he did not have a
sufficiently compelling human storyline to exploit on the NBC telecast
of the worldwide sporting event.
Tracy Klujian, the expelled diver, was not raised by a single
mother, never had a career-threatening injury, and did not overcome a
personal tragedy of any kind before making the Olympic diving team,
U.S. Olympic officials revealed today.
"Had Tracy been involved in an organ donation, as either a donor or
a recipient, that would have been acceptable to us," a diving team
spokesman told reporters. "However, he was not."
According to sources close to the diving team, Mr. Klujian had
concealed the fact that he comes from an intact middle class family who
never lost their home to a flood, tornado, or typhoon.
But what may have sealed Mr.Klujian's doom, sources said, was his utter lack of a gravely ill family member to win a medal for.
"Tracy did his best to hide his background from team officials," one
source said. "But when the truth came out, he was finished."
Speaking to reporters in Beijing, NBC Sports chief Dick Ebersol was
even less charitable, terming Mr. Klujian's actions "a reprehensible
betrayal."
"We do our best to check out all of the athletes to make sure that
their backgrounds are full of compelling human drama, but we can't
catch everything," Mr. Ebersol said. "This is a case of one really bad
guy exploiting the system."
One of these is fake...can you guess which one? And that is that for today.

you mean one of the stories is fake? I'd say the third one about the indian man.
No matter how Spain turns the table, the picture is still ugly. And quite frankly, I'm glad they lost to the U.S.... It suits them.
@genstome - maybe spain feels like they just know the world really well...
or maybe it went down as i documented here.
About the "asian" ad - seriously. I don't buy that comment by Spain that it was meant as a jovial gesture. You only joke like that with people who know you or you know well enough to know that they won't get offended. No intelligent person would innocently make such a gesture towards a complete stranger (or a complete continent and the world participating in and watching the Olympics, for that matter).
I can guess...but that's because half of your stories came from my blog. Ha.
Nice post. Very informative. I got into an argument about the ugly singing girl cause I said it was the right thing to do. I was sort of joking but my point was that the Olympics is aired in HD. If lip syncing is good enough for Ashlee Simpson than why not for a seven year old Chinese girl.
Wow! Who knew the Olympics could be so entertaining. The lip syncing one is definitely true (and reprehensible). I'd say the diver is the false story.
