I am back in Chicago after a 2 month absence. Nothing has changed, and yet everything is different.

When I left, Chicago was home, I was just starting on the interview trail, and I was applying for a completely different specialty.

Having returned with all my interviews completed, and the optho match merely a dream from which I had to wake all too soon, I am looking on my home of the last 5 years with slightly different eyes.

I am only ranking one program from Chicago, and it is not even in my top 5. Essentially this means that even before the Match results are announced on March 19, I know that I will be leaving Chicago in 2 months, possibly never to return-at least to live.

The city has become as much a friend to me as my classmates, and it’s sad to think that we all go our separate ways in just a few months.

But nothing lasts forever…a lesson I have learned all too many times in the last 5 years, and one I am sure will be reiterated again.

So in my remaining time here, I will endeavor to revisit a few old haunts, and explore as many nooks and crannies as I can before it is once again time to day goodbye.

  • Was it you that said there was some kind of truffle oil to be obtained there? I’m very enamored by truffle oil ever since I had some at my favorite restaurant in Big Bear… If so, you should totally go there again. It’s very hard to find good truffle oil so that place must be a gem. :-p
